OfS Launches Major Review into Diploma in Education and Training
On 28 April 2026, the Office for Students (OfS) – the independent regulator for higher education in England – announced a formal review into the Diploma in Education and Training (DET) course.
What went wrong?
-
Large cohorts of students completed the DET course but never received their certificatesdespite taking out student loans.
-
Serious issues with the required 100 hours of teaching activity – poor organisation, lack of monitoring, weak record-keeping and governance.
What happens now?
The OfS will review the final three delivery years (2021-22 to 2023-24), examining SLC funding, student numbers, completion rates, and certificates awarded per institution.
Important context: The DET was replaced in 2024 by the new Diploma in Teaching (DiT) , which better aligns with current educational standards.
